Bicycle Access to/through the Airport:
The ongoing construction at the Airport, including the recent roadway changes, can be challenging for bicyclists to navigate. Both the Airport, in its terminal-area design planning, and the City, in its Guadalupe River recreational trail planning, are considering how to provide bicycle access in and through the east side of the Airport. Recently, the City of San Jose approved funds to be included as part of the development of an overall Roadway Master Plan for the Airport.
These plans are still in the early phases. However, they do include the proposed use of the Water District's future levee maintenance road along the west side of the river (south from the rental car lot bridge) as a designated bike/pedestrian path. In the meantime, the Airport Flyer bus (VTA #10) can be used to shuttle bicyclists through this area.
Bicycle Parking:
At Terminal B, bike racks are located on the left-hand side of the Public Parking vehicle entry area to the Parking Garage. At Terminal A, the bike racks are located on the left-hand side of the vehicle entry area to the Parking Garage and in the area between the exit doors from the south end of baggage claim and the terminal curb.
Due to security concerns, there are no bicycle storage facilities at the Airport.
Restricted Pedestrian Access to and from the Airport:
In the interest of safety, signs are being posted the week of June 16, 2008 to restrict pedestrian access between the Airport and off-site locations. Because of the seriousness of this issue, pedestrians violating this restriction will be sited by the City of San Jose Police.
As an alternative, we are encouraging all pedestrians and bicyclists to utilize the VTA Airport Flyer (#10), which provides free service between Light Rail, the Airport, and Cal Train. The VTA Airport Flyer operates approximately every 15 minutes from 4:30 a.m. to 12 midnight. A complete timetable for the VTA Airport Flyer route can be found at www.VTA.org.
The Flyer currently has pick-up/drop-off locations at the following bus stops: (See map for route and stops: VTA #10 Bus Route and Stops)
First Street at Metro Drive across from the Light Rail station
Technology Drive at Metro Drive
Airport Parkway and Technology Drive
Terminals A and C at the Airport
Cal Train Station in Santa Clara
While bicyclists are not restricted, they are strongly urged to use the Free VTA Airport Flyer, which provides racks to accommodate bicycles. Those accessing the Airport on bicycles are required to stay on official roadways, observe all traffic regulations and are advised to exercise extreme caution.
Restricted pedestrian access will be in place for the remainder of the construction period through 2010. As the construction at the Airport moves forward with the completion of the North Concourse, major roadway work, construction of Terminal B and the Consolidated Rental Car Facility and Parking Garage, the Airport will be inundated with trucks, heavy construction equipment, cranes, and other high-powered vehicles. This and the many phased detours necessary, make walking a very dangerous, if not impossible, way to access the Airport.
Access to the Guadalupe Trail system is unaffected and will remain open.
